March is the Month of Expectation

It’s March and there are lots of things to look forward to this month: we switch to daylight savings time on the 13th; St. Patrick’s Day is the 17th; and the first day of spring is March 20th. We got a little taste of spring this past weekend with warm temperatures and even some sunshine! I hope you were able to get out and enjoy it.

There are also some great things to look forward to at MSY this month. Here’s the rundown . . .

First, the Thursday lineup has changed. I’ll be teaching warm vinyasa on Thursdays at 5:30. If you like your yoga with a side order of sweat, this class is for you. Warm vinyasa is an all-levels flow class. We’ll heat the studio to 80-85 degrees and start off with some sun salutations and core-refining poses to build heat internally. Then we’ll slow things down a little with some static standing poses, a couple of cooling poses, and a well-deserved śavasana (final resting pose). This class is available in person and online, but if you’re attending online, you’ll have to heat your own room. ;)

At 7pm on Thursdays, Rae Dyer is teaching “Yoga for Everybody.” This 75-minute class guides each participant to follow their own breath and alignment through a series of safe poses that increase strength, flexibility and endurance, while creating stillness in the mind. It combines flowing, static and restorative poses throughout the practice. There will be 15 minutes at the end of class to extend a restorative pose, or to participate in a sitting meditation. This class is appropriate for all levels - beginners embraced! As with all of Rae’s classes, veterans and first responders are welcome to attend free of charge.

Beginner Power Yoga remains on the schedule at 6am on Thursdays, but the class has been shortened to 30 minutes in order to accommodate busy morning schedules. This online class is donation based, so you can use your class pass, pay what you want, or attend for free!

Free-for-All Fridays are continuing this month with the following lineup:

·      March 11th at 5:30 – Yoga 101 with Mark Benincosa – free for all retail and restaurant workers

·      March 18th at 4:30 – Full Moon Flow with Holly Pickens – all donations go to Bonnie’s Bus

·      March 25th at 5:30 – Kundalini Yoga with Lauri Brammer

This Sunday, March 13th, I’m offering a meditation workshop for beginners that I’m calling “Sitting in Silence: How to Begin a Meditation Practice.” This is a Body Wisdom workshop (free to Body Wisdom members but open to everyone) designed to teach you how to make meditation a daily habit. In addition to learning how to establish the habit, we’ll also explore simple meditation techniques that make “sitting in silence” as easy as possible. Attend in person or live online.

Finally, yoga teacher training begins on March20th! I am so excited to welcome a new group of trainees to the MSY family. And what a group it is! I couldn’t have hand-selected a better group – these future teachers are going to do great things! Want to join us? Don’t delay – registration closes on March 14th.

One final note regarding online classes. I’ll be keeping an eye on online attendance over the course of this month. While I still want to support those of you who cannot yet enjoy in-person classes, I no longer think it’s necessary to offer all or even most of our classes online. My goal is to settle on 2-4 online classes per week. Cast your vote with your attendance this month.

That’s all for now! See you soon.
